BAKFlip Tonneau Covers | MX4, G2 & F1 Hard Folding Truck Bed Protection

★★★★★4.8/5· thousands of reviews

Our MX4 delivers the ultimate combination of durability and style with its heavy-duty matte finish aluminum panels. We designed this bakflip tonneau cover to withstand daily use while giving your truck a low-profile look that complements any paint color.

The four-panel folding design lets you access your entire bed in seconds — fold panels forward for partial access or remove them completely when you need to haul tall cargo. When closed, the MX4 sits flush against your bed rails and locks at the tailgate for security.

  • Matte black powder-coated aluminum panels resist scratches and UV fade
  • Folds completely open for 100% bed access without removal
  • Auto-latching buckles secure each panel section
  • Installs with included clamps — no drilling required
  • Compatible with most spray-in bedliners and over-rail accessories

How our quad-panel folding system works

How our quad-panel folding system works

Every BAKFlip tonneau cover we make uses a four-panel design that folds forward in sections. The first panel near your tailgate releases with a pull of the strap, then each subsequent panel unlatches automatically as you fold it forward. This staged opening gives you precise control over how much bed you expose.

When you need full access, all four panels stack neatly against your rear window and stay there without straps or props. The same MX4 construction that supports hundreds of pounds when closed becomes a stable platform for storing smaller items on top of the folded stack. You’ll find that partial opening works perfectly for daily groceries while full access handles plywood sheets and appliances.

Materials and weather protection

Materials and weather protection

Aluminum vs. composite panels

We offer two core material platforms across our BAKFlip line. The MX4 and G2 both use powder-coated aluminum for proven durability and moderate weight, while the F1 introduces fiber-reinforced polymer for maximum strength with minimal mass. Aluminum resists corrosion naturally and maintains rigidity in temperature extremes. FRP adds impact resistance that aluminum can’t match — a dropped toolbox or hail won’t dent composite panels.

Sealed edges and drainage

Every panel features EPDM rubber seals along all four edges. We route water away from the bed using integrated channels that direct moisture toward the tailgate, where our dual-action seal prevents intrusion even during highway driving in heavy rain. The G2 model refines this system with an additional perimeter gasket that compresses against the bed rail for an extra layer of protection.

Installation and bed compatibility

Installation and bed compatibility

We ship every BAKFlip cover with rail-mounted clamps that install without drilling holes in your truck. The clamp system adjusts to fit bed rails from 5 feet to 8 feet in length, and we include multiple clamp positions to accommodate factory bed caps and stake pockets.

Most installations take 30 to 45 minutes with basic hand tools. You’ll position the rails along each side of your bed, secure them with the provided clamps, then drop the folded panel assembly onto the rails and lock it in place. Our instruction manual includes truck-specific notes for models that require spacer shims or alternate clamp positioning.

MX4 has held up perfectly for two years
I installed the MX4 on my 2021 F-150 in early 2023 and it still looks brand new. The matte finish hides scratches really well, and I’ve had zero issues with leaks even during heavy rainstorms. I fold it open at least twice a week for work materials and the hinges are still smooth.

G2 gloss finish looks like factory paint
The high-gloss coating on my G2 matches my truck’s silver paint almost exactly. I was worried it would fade in the Arizona sun, but after 18 months it still has the same shine. Installation took me about 40 minutes by myself with no issues.

F1 is worth the upgrade for heavy use
I switched from an MX4 to the F1 because I regularly carry a roof cargo box on top of my cover. The composite panels feel way more rigid and I haven’t seen a single stress crack. It’s noticeably lighter too, which makes folding it easier when I’m loading furniture.

Great cover, minor seal adjustment needed
My MX4 fit perfectly on my Silverado except for one corner where the seal didn’t compress fully. I loosened the clamp on that side and repositioned it about half an inch, and now it’s completely watertight. Once I got it dialed in, it’s been flawless.

Folds flat exactly as advertised
I was skeptical that four panels would actually stack flat against the window without bulging, but it works perfectly. When I haul plywood I fold the whole thing forward and it stays put without any straps. The auto-latching feature is convenient when I’m closing it in a hurry.

No drilling required — keeps resale value intact
I lease my truck so I needed a cover that wouldn’t damage the bed. The clamp system installed cleanly and when I remove it for trade-in there won’t be any holes to patch. The cover also looks professional enough that I think it’ll actually help resale value.

Common questions about BAKFlip hard folding covers

Yes, all our BAKFlip models work with spray-in bedliners. The rail clamps adjust to accommodate the added height from the liner coating, and you’ll install the cover on top of the liner without any modifications. We include height-adjustable clamps in every kit specifically for this purpose.

If you have a drop-in plastic bedliner, you may need to trim the bed rail caps slightly so our clamps can sit flush against the bed rails. We provide a trim template and instructions for this — it takes about 10 minutes with a utility knife.

We recommend touchless or hand washing instead of automatic brush car washes. High-pressure spinning brushes can catch the edge of a panel and potentially damage the seal or hinge cover. The cover itself is fully sealed and can handle direct spray from any angle.

If you do use an automatic wash, make sure all four panels are fully closed and latched. The latch system will keep them secure, but double-check before entering the wash bay.

Each BAKFlip tonneau cover is manufactured to fit specific truck makes, models, and bed lengths. When you browse our product pages, you’ll enter your truck’s year, make, model, and bed length to see only the covers that match your exact specifications.

We produce fitments for Ford, Chevy, GMC, Ram, Toyota, and Nissan trucks from 2002 to current model years. Short bed (5-6 feet), standard bed (6.5-7 feet), and long bed (8 feet) options are available for most trucks.

The core difference is the powder coat finish — the MX4 uses a matte black coating while the G2 offers high-gloss finishes in multiple colors. Both models use the same aluminum panel construction, hinge system, and latch mechanism.

The G2 includes an enhanced perimeter seal system with an additional gasket layer along the bed rails. This makes the G2 slightly better at preventing water intrusion in heavy rain, though both models are fully weatherproof for normal conditions. The MX4’s matte finish shows scratches and scuffs less obviously than gloss, which matters if you regularly slide cargo across the top.

Yes, every BAKFlip model features quick-release panels that detach from the rail system in under 60 seconds. You simply pull the release straps at each hinge, lift the entire panel assembly off the rails, and store it in your garage or truck bed.

The panels fold together into a compact bundle for storage. When you’re ready to reinstall, drop the assembly back onto the rails and engage the latches. You don’t need to realign or adjust anything — it drops right back into position.

All BAKFlip covers lock at the tailgate using our integrated latch system. When closed, the panels cannot be opened from the outside unless someone releases your tailgate first. This means your cover security is tied to your truck’s tailgate lock.

For additional security, we recommend installing a tailgate lock or using your truck’s factory electronic tailgate lock if equipped. With the tailgate secured, the cover provides full protection for tools and equipment stored in your bed.

Our aluminum models (MX4 and G2) weigh approximately 60 to 75 pounds depending on bed length. The F1 fiber-reinforced polymer model weighs 40 to 50 pounds for the same bed sizes — about 30% lighter than aluminum.

You can install any model by yourself, though having a second person makes it easier to position the rail clamps evenly on both sides. The panels arrive pre-assembled, so you’re handling one integrated unit rather than loose pieces.
