BAKFlip F1 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover

★★★★★4.8/5· thousands of reviews

Our BAKFlip F1 represents the next evolution in hard folding tonneau cover design. The four-panel aluminum construction folds completely forward against the cab, giving you instant full bed access when you need to haul tall cargo. When closed, the low-profile matte black finish sits flush with your truck bed rails for a factory-installed look.

We built the F1 with the same aircraft-grade aluminum panels you'll find across our entire lineup, but added refinements that make daily use smoother. The integrated slam latch system locks each panel in place with a firm press—no fiddling with separate buckles or straps. Every F1 ships with our no-drill clamp installation hardware, so you can mount the cover in under an hour without permanent modifications to your truck bed.

Aluminum Panel Construction & Finish

Aluminum Panel Construction & Finish

Every F1 panel starts as a sheet of aircraft-grade aluminum that we form into the rigid, lightweight structure you see on the finished cover. This aluminum alloy delivers the strength to support cargo loads up to 400 lbs while keeping the entire cover light enough for one person to fold and unfold without strain.

We apply a matte black powder coating to all four panels after fabrication. This finish does more than match your truck’s trim—it creates a hard, UV-resistant surface that holds up to gravel chips, bird droppings, and the daily abuse of sliding cargo in and out of the bed. The matte texture hides minor scuffs better than gloss finishes, so the F1 maintains a clean appearance even after months of use.

Slam Latch System & Panel Operation

Slam Latch System & Panel Operation

The F1’s slam latch system replaces the buckle-and-strap setup you’ll find on older tonneau cover designs. Each latch point engages automatically when you press the panel down firmly—no need to thread straps through buckles or adjust tension manually. To release a panel, you simply lift the latch handle and fold the panel forward.

All four panels fold in sequence toward the cab. When you want full bed access, fold the first panel forward until it rests against panel two, then continue folding the pair forward until all four panels stack neatly behind the cab window. The entire folding process takes about thirty seconds once you’ve released the latches. When you’re ready to close the cover, unfold the panels in reverse order and press each one down until you hear the latch click.

Installation Process & Bed Rail Compatibility

Installation Process & Bed Rail Compatibility

We designed the F1 installation system around adjustable clamps that grip your truck’s bed rails without drilling. The kit includes clamps, rail assemblies, and all necessary hardware. You’ll position the side rails on top of your bed rails, slide the clamps into place, and tighten them down with the included hand tools.

The clamp design accommodates most factory bed rail profiles, including stake pocket beds and caps. If your truck has a spray-in bedliner, the clamps adjust to account for the added thickness. The entire installation takes forty-five minutes to an hour for someone working alone. Once the rails are secure, the four aluminum panels drop into place on their hinge assemblies—no separate attachment steps required.

Install was easier than I expected
I'm not the most mechanically inclined person, but I got the F1 installed by myself in about fifty minutes. The clamps lined up with my bed rails perfectly, and the instructions were clear. The cover looks factory and the matte finish matches my truck's trim.

Holds up to Pacific Northwest weather
We get a lot of rain here, and the F1 keeps my tools and gear dry. I've had it through two winters now and the seals are still tight. A little mist gets in during heavy downpours, but nothing I wouldn't expect from a folding cover.

Perfect for hauling plywood and lumber
I fold the panels forward every time I pick up sheet goods at the lumberyard. Takes thirty seconds to fold, and I can close it back up just as fast when I'm done. The aluminum panels have taken a beating from sliding lumber and still look great.

Great cover, minor learning curve on latches
The slam latches took me a couple days to get used to—I was pressing too softly at first and they wouldn't engage. Once I figured out the right amount of pressure, they work every time. The cover itself is solid and the matte finish hides dust well.

Low profile looks clean on my Sierra
I wanted a cover that didn't stick up high above the bed rails, and the F1 sits perfectly flush. From the side of the truck you barely notice it's there. The matte black finish matches my blacked-out trim, so it looks like it came from the factory.

No regrets after six months of daily use
I open and close this cover at least once a day for work, and it's held up without any issues. The hinges are smooth, the latches are solid, and the panels haven't warped or faded. Well worth the investment for a cover that actually lasts.

Questions About the BAKFlip F1

No, the F1 installs with adjustable clamps that grip your factory bed rails. You won't drill any holes or make permanent modifications to your truck. The clamp system works with most bed rail profiles, including stake pocket beds and beds with spray-in liners.

Installation takes about forty-five minutes to an hour. You'll position the side rails, slide the clamps into place, and tighten them down with basic hand tools. The aluminum panels then drop onto the hinge assemblies without separate fasteners.

The F1 supports up to 400 lbs of evenly distributed static weight when all four panels are closed and latched. This capacity allows you to haul lighter cargo on top of the cover, such as camping gear, kayaks on a rack system, or lumber that overhangs the bed.

The aluminum panels will flex slightly under load but return to their original shape once you remove the weight. Avoid concentrating heavy loads in one spot—spread the weight across multiple panels for best results.

The F1 is highly water-resistant but not 100% waterproof. We install EPDM rubber seals along every panel edge and around the perimeter where the cover meets the bed rails. These seals divert the vast majority of rain and road spray away from your cargo.

In heavy rain or car washes, you may see small amounts of mist near the panel seams. The built-in drain channels route bulk water away from the bed interior, keeping your gear dry in typical driving conditions. For complete waterproof protection, we recommend using additional cargo bags or containers for sensitive items.

You can fold one, two, three, or all four panels forward depending on your cargo needs. Each panel operates independently once you release its latch. If you're hauling something that fits under just the rear two panels, you can leave the front two closed and fold only the rear panels up.

This modular design gives you flexibility for mixed loads. You might close all four panels for daily commuting, fold back two panels to fit a cooler, or fold all four forward when you need full bed access for tall cargo.

Both the F1 and MX4 use four-panel aluminum construction with a matte black finish, but the F1 features our integrated slam latch system while the MX4 uses a traditional buckle-and-strap latch design. The slam latches on the F1 engage automatically when you press the panel down, eliminating the need to thread straps through buckles.

Both covers offer the same load capacity, weather resistance, and folding operation. The choice comes down to whether you prefer the faster slam latch system on the F1 or the proven buckle design on the MX4.

Yes, the F1 clamp system adjusts to fit most factory bed rail caps and stake pocket covers. The clamps slide along the rail assemblies so you can position them to avoid obstacles like tie-down hooks or caps.

If your truck has aftermarket bed rail accessories, measure the rail width before ordering. The F1 clamps accommodate rails up to about two inches wide, which covers most factory and aftermarket setups. Contact us if you're unsure about compatibility with a specific rail system.

Wash the F1 panels with car wash soap and water using a soft sponge or microfiber cloth. The matte powder coating resists UV damage and minor scratches, but avoid abrasive scrubbers that can dull the finish.

Rinse the panels thoroughly after washing to remove soap residue. You don't need to wax or polish the matte finish—in fact, wax will create shiny spots that look uneven. For stubborn dirt or tree sap, use a dedicated automotive cleaner designed for matte finishes. Clean the panel seals and drain channels a few times per year to keep water flowing away from the bed.
