BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
The BAKFlip MX4 is our premium hard folding tonneau cover engineered for drivers who demand durability without sacrificing bed access. Built with heavy-duty aluminum panels and a matte black finish that resists scratches and UV damage, the MX4 installs in minutes with no drilling required.
Our four-panel folding design lets you access your truck bed from front or rear, and the panels fold completely upright against the cab for full bed use. The MX4 sits flush with your bed rails for a low-profile look while maintaining a weatherproof seal that keeps cargo dry in rain, snow, and highway spray. We back every MX4 with a multi-year warranty covering panels, hardware, and finish.

Aluminum Panel Construction & Finish

We manufacture the BAKFlip MX4 panels from heavy-gauge aluminum that resists denting and corrosion without adding excessive weight to your truck. Each panel receives a powder-coated matte black finish that hides minor scratches and won’t fade under direct sunlight.
The matte texture also reduces glare in your rearview mirror during daytime driving. Our hard folding tonneau covers all share this aluminum construction, but the MX4 offers the thickest panel gauge in our product line for maximum impact resistance. The finish is designed to complement factory bed liner textures and OEM paint finishes across all major truck brands.
Installation & Bed Rail System

Our clamp-on rail system mounts to your truck bed without drilling holes or using adhesives. You’ll attach the side rails to your bed rails using stainless steel clamps that tighten with a standard hex wrench.
Most customers complete installation in under 30 minutes with basic hand tools. The rails include built-in weather seals that compress against your bed rails to block water intrusion along the sides. After the rails are secured, you’ll drop the four folding panels onto the rail track and lock them in place at the tailgate. We include detailed instructions with photos for every major truck model, and our support team can walk you through the process if you encounter fitment questions.
Folding Mechanism & Bed Access

The MX4 divides into four equal panels connected by reinforced aluminum hinges. You can fold the cover forward toward the cab or backward toward the tailgate depending on which section of your bed you need to access.
When fully opened, all four panels fold upright and rest against the rear of your cab, giving you 100% bed access without removing the cover. The panels lock in the upright position so they won’t collapse while you’re loading cargo. Each panel weighs approximately 15 pounds, making it easy to lift and fold with one hand. The hinge system uses stainless steel pins that won’t rust or seize even after years of exposure to road salt and moisture.

Common Questions About the BAKFlip MX4
We manufacture the MX4 for most full-size truck models from 2000 to present including Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, Ram 1500, GMC Sierra, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan. The cover is available in configurations for 5.5-foot, 6.5-foot, and 8-foot beds.
You’ll need to verify your exact truck year, model, and bed length during checkout to ensure proper fitment. Our product configurator will show compatible options for your specific vehicle. If you have aftermarket bed rail caps or stake pocket covers, measure your bed width at the rail tops to confirm clearance.
The MX4 includes an automatic locking latch that engages at your tailgate when you close the cover. You’ll use your truck’s tailgate lock to secure the entire system—when the tailgate is locked, the cover cannot be opened.
This integrated design means you don’t need to carry a separate key for the tonneau cover. The latch mechanism is made from reinforced nylon and stainless steel to resist prying. For additional security, you can install aftermarket tailgate locks that prevent tailgate removal.
We do not recommend driving with the cover in a partially folded position. The panels are designed to be either fully closed and latched or folded completely upright against the cab.
Driving with panels in an intermediate position can cause wind damage to the hinges and may allow panels to shift unexpectedly. If you need to haul tall cargo, fold the cover all the way forward and secure it in the upright position using the built-in prop rods. This configuration is safe for highway speeds and won’t damage the cover.
We recommend cleaning the MX4 panels every 2-3 months with mild soap and water to remove road grime and prevent buildup in the drainage channels. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that could damage the matte finish.
You should also inspect the rubber seals twice a year and wipe them down with a silicone-based protectant to keep them flexible. Check the clamp bolts every six months to ensure they remain tight—this is especially important if you drive on rough roads frequently. The aluminum hinges and stainless steel hardware don’t require lubrication under normal use.
The MX4 is fully compatible with spray-in bed liners and drop-in plastic liners. The side rails clamp to your bed rails above the liner surface, so the liner won’t interfere with installation.
If you use a bed mat or bed rug, you can trim it to fit around the rail mounting points if needed. The cover also works with bed rail caps as long as they don’t raise the rail height by more than one inch. Most OEM and aftermarket bed protection systems are compatible with our mounting hardware.
The MX4 uses thicker aluminum panels with a premium matte powder-coat finish, while the G2 features fiberglass-reinforced polymer panels with a textured finish. The MX4 offers better dent resistance and a more refined appearance.
Both covers use the same four-panel folding design and clamp-on installation system. The MX4 supports higher load capacity and includes upgraded weather seals. The G2 is lighter in weight and typically costs less, making it a good choice for drivers who prioritize value. We recommend the MX4 if you frequently carry heavy cargo or want the best scratch resistance.
We back the MX4 with a three-year warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship for the aluminum panels, hinges, and mounting hardware. The finish carries a separate warranty against fading, peeling, and cracking under normal use.
The warranty also covers the weather seals and locking mechanism. If you experience any issues with fitment or component failure during the warranty period, we’ll send replacement parts at no charge. The warranty does not cover damage from accidents, improper installation, or modifications to the cover structure. Register your purchase within 30 days to activate full warranty coverage.
